Bach and Beethoven, Ellie Blackshaw (violin) Raija Walker (piano)
Wisely, this concert was in the South Aisle, the old church, where the roof is not too high and the sound is more contained. These artists work so well together. The interplay between them was instinctive and the balance perfect.
The sensuously ornamented Adagios and spritely Allegros of Bach’s Violin Sonata in E major were an excellent appetizer. The main course, Beethoven’s Kreutzer Sonata, was possibly even more satisfying. Beethoven listed it as a sonata for piano with violin obligato, thus giving both instruments equal importance. These very fine players certainly achieved that essential musical partnership and a delightful performance.
