More staffies dumped on streets of Brighton and Hove

A steady stream of young Staffordshire bull terriers are being abandoned on the streets of Brighton and Hove, the council said today (Wednesday 23 May).

Animal welfare officers from Brighton and Hove City Council are continuing to pick up the abandoned dogs and kennels are constantly full.

The latest additions are Marley and Sofie, both young sweet-natured staffies, the council said.

They have joined Bob and Jet who have both been in council kennels since March.

Animal welfare officer Maggi Hollands said: “All would make fantastic, loyal and loving family pets in the right homes.”

She added that all local animal rescue centres had staffies needing homes so were reluctant to take in any more of the breed.

She said: “Our hearts sink when we find another stray staffie as we know that they are going to be so difficult to rehome.

“It’s such a shame that they have become the latest in a long line of ‘trophy dogs’ often bought for breeding and then cruelly abandoned.

“We urgently need to find good homes of some of these animals, which have been abandoned through no fault of their own.”
