Rom Com Con
Unlucky in love, Lizzy and Juliette decide to road-test popular rom coms to find romance. Lizzy and Juliette quickly find that real life isn’t like the movies. Charming, funny and witty, this played out like a film itself, with a structured synopsis (equilibrium; a major event and new equilibrium – for you Film Studies students). At times this felt like a university dissertation, so involved was their research and reasoning. At other times, it felt like a relationship advice column teenage girls would read in Bliss magazine. I won’t spoil the ending but there were hints of an even bigger plot twist (and I was not the only one to think this) that never came to fruition. A PowerPoint presentation and films of couples added more to the story – but sound levels and problems with the equipment made it frustrating for the two performers, throwing them off their lines numerous times. Lizzy was very likeable and dealt with this gracefully using comedy. I only hope next year they have the chance to rectify this. Or a new chapter to the story: parenthood perhaps?!
