Beacons lit across Brighton and Hove to mark Queen’s diamond jubilee

Beacons were due to be lit in Brighton and Hove at 10.15pm to mark the Queen’s diamond jubilee.

Crowds gathered at Hove Lagoon and by the Peace Statue on the seafront and on Beacon Hill in Rottingdean this evening (Monday 4 June).

The Mayor of Brighton and Hove, Councillor Bill Randall, was due to light the beacon at Hove Lagoon with a brass band playing.

The Royal British Legion was due to light the beacon in Rottingdean.

And Councillor Jason Kitcat, leader of Brighton and Hove City Council, was expected to light the beacon on Norfolk Groyne between the Peace Statue and the Brighton Bandstand.

Community arts charity Same Sky, which organises the Children’s Parade and Burning the Clocks, were co-ordinating the event.

There were dozens of street parties across Brighton and Hove, music on the Brighton Bandstand and a 1950s themed event on the Palace Pier.

In addition, tens of thousands of people turned out during the day for Hove Lions Day in Hove Park and the bank holiday market at Brighton Racecourse.

Councillor Kitcat said: “We hope that everyone has a fabulous jubilee holiday and the lighting of beacons across the city will give that extra special touch to the start of the extended bank holiday.

“Hundreds of people are involved in street parties and community events in the city and there are plenty of celebration events to enjoy.”
