Sunn O)))
The vaulted low brick ceilings of the Coalition provided the perfect atmosphere for Sunn O)))’s brand of Grimm- robed drone, and perfect resonance for support act Russian sub bass throat singers Phurpa, who supplied an hour of solar plexus tingling chants.
Continual bursts of dry ice filled every crevice with a primordial mist, so thick you could hardly see your hand in front of your face as the enigmatic Greg Anderson and Stephen O’Malley took the stage as cowled monks for a quadrophonic assault.
Make no mistake there was nothing like seeing Sunn O))) live – a band taking their sonic aesthetic to the extreme, soundscapes so dense and pulsating you could get easily lost … I did metaphorically and with the smoke machines turned up to eleven, physically too.
