Top Cat: the Movie 3D
The latest William Hanna and Joseph Barbera iconic animation to be remade/remodelled for the 21st Century, Top Cat the streetwise Tom and his crew of alleycats are revived for a new adventure.
This dubbed Mexican production maintains some of the original elements of the ‘60s original: T C – based on Phil Sivers’ Bilko, Benny the Ball, Choo-Choo, Fancy Fancy, Brains and Spook are all present, as is Officer Dibble, along with a new villain (Strickland), and a new love interest
(also, thank God, the original theme tune’s intact).
The plot revolves around the entrepreneureal Strickland’s plans to replace TCs’s old nemesis Dibble with a squad of robots and implement a futuristic dystopia where everyone in New York City ends up behind bars.
Top Cat has a smattering of comedy one-liners, but they are few and far between. Traditional animation techniques and rudimentary 3D add a nostalgic charm.
