Song of Miriam – Reflections on the Music of Kurt Weill

Bassist Jair-Rohm Parker Wells assembled an international group of acclaimed avant-garde and free jazz musicians for this evening of bold interpretations of the Weill songbook. Guest vocalist Lene Lovich, still refreshingly bonkers and a perfect Lotte Lenya, gave a rousingly theatrical performance throughout from ‘Alabama Song’ to ‘Lost In The Stars’. Drummer Tony Bianco continued the music between the vocals with an amazingly dexterous performance, while piano, trumpet, bass and cello fed off the intricate rhythms spiralling off into mind-blowing flights of fancy. Beat poet John Sinclair read a piece before the ensemble ended with a rousing ‘Mack The Knife’.
