Richard Herring – Talking Cock & Catie Wilkins – Joy Is My Middle Name (Edinburgh previews)

Richard Herring’s Talking Cock show is a re-working of a show he took to the Edinburgh Fringe ten years ago, and his familiarity with the material at this stage in the preview season shows it. Mixing material that is intelligent with the juvenile, revelling in phallic euphemisms, and conducting his own research online, as well as investigating others’ studies, this was educational in many ways as well as providing a rapid turnover of jokes per minutes. Catie Wilkins provided support for Herring with her Edinburgh preview, clearly still at its patchwork stage of interesting ideas and topics strung together, farming her laid back irony and contemporary feminist ideas to sow a rich harvest yet to come. These were two very enjoyable shows at different stages of their construction, each teasing and provoking brains into thought with original laughter.
