Brighton MP’s private member’s bill unopposed at 2nd reading

A private member’s bill sponsored by Brighton Kemptown MP Simon Kirby has cleared its first key hurdle in the House of Commons.

The Conservative MP’s Disabled Persons’ Parking Badges Bill was passed unopposed and without debate at what is known as the “second reading” stage this afternoon (Friday 6 July).

Next it is due to go to a committee where members will have a chance to debate the detail of the bill.

If it passes the committee stage, it will need to clear the report stage and third reading. These two stages are often dealt with in quick succession by MPs.

The bill will then be considered by the House of Lords where it will start again at the first reading stage, going through the same steps as in the Commons.

Mr Kirby has said that his bill has attracted cross-party support.

He hopes that it will reduce blue badge fraud and make it easier for disabled people to park as a result.
