Fire crews deal with flooding in Brighton and Hove

Torrential rain led to fire crews tackling flooding at five properties in Brighton and Hove overnight – having to isolate the electrical supply in four of the incidents.

East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said that it received eight 999 calls in two hours as a result of the downpours.

It sent crews to five incidents, including one where it helped pump sewage from the property and isolated the water supply.

And it said that the incidents varied from the flooding of electrics, sewage from drains, pond water overflowing in a garden, a leaking roof and basement flooding.

The five incidents included electrics being flooded near St George’s Road in Kemp Town shortly before midnight on Saturday (7 July).

Just after midnight, in the early hours of Sunday (8 July), electrics were flooded at a property in Hova Villas, Hove.

At the same time crews went to Warmdene Road in Patcham where they used a submersible pump to pump sewage from the flooded kitchen basement area.

Firefighters helped clean up and Southern Water and contractors were contacted.

By 1am firefighters isolated the electrics at a home in St Aubyns, Hove, after water flooded in through a top floor balcony.

And just after 1.15am firefighters had to force their way into a property in Lewes Road, Brighton, where they isolated the electrics and handed over control of the incident to Southern water.
