Alibi saves Brighton comedian Steve Coogan from driving ban

Comedian Steve Coogan has been cleared of failing to tell Sussex Police who was driving his Range Rover when it was filmed speeding along Hove seafront.

Coogan, 46, of Greenways, Ovingdean, also faced a charge of breaking the 30mph limit but this was dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service.

A conviction would have meant that Coogan could have received six penalty points on his driving licence.

This would have been enough to take him over 12 points in three years, resulting in an automatic six-month driving ban.

His Range Rover set off a speed camera in Kingsway, Hove, just west of the King Alfred Leisure Centre on Wednesday 12 October last year.

He said that he wasn’t the driver and had an alibi but, although he had tried, he had not been able to find out who had been speeding along the A259.
