Musical Travels In Italy: Coffee Concert
This musical progress through 18th century Italy gave an insight into how Britons began to appreciate the history of European music. In a number of popular books, Charles Burney (1726-1814), an articulate connoisseur, shared his first-hand understanding of many great names of Italian music with his fellow countrymen. Excerpts read by Peter Morrison (narrator) were well illustrated in song by soprano Sue Mileham and in an eclectic selection of sonatas by Ambrose Page (piano), who also compiled the programme and an excellent printed commentary, handing Burney’s work on to a new appreciative audience, the coffee and cake a charming bonus.
