Laura Vane & The Vipertones

This Anglo/Dutch combo, playing only their second UK show, started with a frantic wah-wah guitar and Hammond instrumental workout before heavily-pregnant local funkateer Laura stepped up to begin her vocal duties on a wailing ‘About To Blow’. The feel throughout was pure late 60’s/early 70’s funky soul jazz from King Curtis sax solos and blasts of Blaxploitation to Southern soul heartbreakers and the lighter mid-tempo Love Unlimited-like ‘Move No Mountains’. The crowd were well up for it, cheering every solo and the show closer, ‘Tear The Roof Off’ pretty much summed up an explosive performance, from this super-tight, super-funky outfit.
