CelebCity On the big screen
The Hollywood stars have been coming to Brighton beach recently by way of Brighton’s Big Screen. The 100 square ft LED screen landed by the West Pier on Friday 27 July and is set to stay till Sunday 12 August. The screen runs from 10am–10pm, to broadcast live coverage of the Games plus a selection of free blockbuster movies. Toy Story, Grease, Finding Nemo and Back To The Future are still on the bill – with the people’s choice film to be announced.
Firle music
It’s cool for cats. On Saturday 1 September the unique Downland village of Firle will echo to the wonderful words and music of Chris Difford, co-founder, musician and lyricist of the legendary group Squeeze and his super-talented friends: Matt Deighton, Ed Harcourt, Boo Hewerdine, Chris Holland, Mark Nevin and Kathryn Williams plus DJ Russ Dewbury. Starting at 8pm and going on until Midnight, Firle In Music promises to be an ‘Indian Summer’ (we hope) evening absolutely not to be missed. Local and special ales will be served together with wines and a hugely tasty selection of food prepared by local foodie experts. Then, after enjoying the music, you can simply dance the night away to Brighton Jazz Rooms sensation Russ Dewbury. The event aims to raise money for Firle Church as part of a year-long fundraising programme, promoted by St Peter’s Church Firle PCC with kind permission of Lord Gage. Get down to Firle Place Riding School on Saturday 1 September. Tickets are £35 or £50 VIP (includes superior front seating, waitress service and backstage intros)
online at www.chrisdifford-stores.myshopify.com or from Union Music Store, Lewes or Firle Village Stores or The Ram Inn, Firle.
Sussex olympian
Now that sport is the new rock ‘n’ roll, Sussex had to get involved with its own superstar. Roll up Tina Cook, the showjumper who helped win Silver at home along with the three-day eventing team. Alongside British royalty, Zara Phillips, and 51-year-old Mary King, Cook was cheered on by her local pub, The Gunn Inn in Findon. We couldn’t be more proud of the Sussex born Olympian – well done Tina.
Lewes lights
That’s not where Brighton’s Olympics links end however, with the iconic rings of the fantastic Opening Ceremony being forged by a local Lewes firm. Howard Eaton Lighting provided the crowning glory to the Danny Boyle directed spectacle, which had also seen a parachuting Queen Elizabeth, a piano playing Mr Bean and a whole host of dancing nurses. The Olympic rings showered silver and gold sparks over the huge arena, which evolved from a idyllic countryside scene to a high-powered industrial hub in front of thousands of eager spectators’ eyes. Howard Eaton himself also said that his firm had made an ‘iconic item’ for the closing ceremony – keep an eye out!
Spotted!
James Kendall spotted Stuart Leslie Goddard, AKA Adam Ant from Adam and the Ants fame, taking a stroll around Brighton’s North Laine. Wearing a a flat cap, bandana and – all but obligatory – pirate jumper, Adam was happy to stop and chat to passers-by.
