Brighton Pride street party organisers ask residents to public meeting

A Brighton Pride group is holding a public meeting for residents as it finalises plans for a street party in and around St James’s Street.

The Gay Village Party Committee urged people living in the area to come to the meeting so that the committee could listen to residents’ views and concerns.

The committee held a meeting last Monday (6 August) but the turnout was poor so it has arranged a second meeting for this coming Wednesday (15 August).

The street party takes place after the annual Brighton and Hove Pride parade and the event in Preston Park.

This year Pride and the street party are on Saturday 1 September. Well, the street party starts on the Saturday!

The organisers are aware that concerns and issues have been raised in previous years and they are keen to discuss these with people living in the area.

They want to explain what they are doing to manage the event and look at what else they can do on behalf of residents.

Simon Kirby, the Conservative MP for Brighton Kemptown, is encouraging residents to go along to the meeting.

He said: “Pride weekend is a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the LGBT community within Brighton and Hove and it is events like the Gay Village Party that typify the festive atmosphere and community spirit that Pride evokes.”

“I would encourage residents to go along to the consultation evening and to raise any questions or concerns that they may have about the street party.”

The meeting will be at the New Steine Hotel in New Steine Gardens, Brighton, starting at 7pm on Wednesday.
