Jump in a Nissan Micra, razz up to Dungeness and push onto Denge in Kent and you will find a great location consisting of radar and acoustic mirrors called ‘listening ears’. The Prodigy filmed there and the huge concrete structure is a perfect playground for sci- fi bone tickling inspiration. In this concrete jungle it’s good fun to hold a static pose for as long as your mind is willing to explore such an idea.
The atmosphere there was so thick you could sculpt it. If that wasn’t enough, there was always the legacy of the Magnox power station. Machete your way through the overgrown path from the radar back to the car and reverse to Dungeness and you are overwhelmed with the towering power station with surrounding residents in old sporadic fisherman’s residencies with other worldly Mad Max Esq gardens and random trinkerty bits.
The Romney, Hythe & Dymchurch Light Railway opened in 1947 by Hollywood Stars Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy, and many director’s and fashion shoots have taken place in Ness. The surrounding area of Dungeness feels like a Safari park trip, best viewed from the comfort of the car, it’s spectacular to look at but the thought of a picnic seems wrong. I can understand why filmmaker Derek Jarman lived there – it’s a ready made film set.
That night I had the strangest dream ever and it felt like diluted water compared to the reality of a second life daytrip. What on Earth am I prattling on about?Don’t ask me. Err…
