Ravel Double Bill (on demand) – Glyndebourne Opera

These short operas are full of French slang and the delightful translations are so much easier to read as cinema sub-titles than as text suspended over the Glyndebourne stage. I could devote all my attention to the brilliant music and performances. This is just as well for ‘L’Heure Espagnole’ is brim full with dainty snippets of lust and misunderstanding that reward proper concentration.
‘L’enfant et les sortilèges’ is a charming fairy-tale and the Glyndebourne magic came across wonderfully on the big screen – a big thank you to The Duke of York’s. Catch both productions on the Guardian web site.
