What a load of rubbish on Brighton and Hove’s beaches

Cleaning staff cleared more than 23 tons of rubbish from the beaches of Brighton and Hove over the weekend (Saturday 18 August and Sunday 19 August).

Brighton and Hove City Council said that this was the most collected in one weekend this year.

It said that 60 extra litter bins had been placed along the seafront and Hove Lawns area.

And 15 extra 700-gallon street bins  and eight extra 250-gallon bins were put out around the Brighton town centre and seafront area.

Councillor Ollie Sykes, deputy chairman of the council’s Environment and Sustainability Committee, said: “Brighton and Hove has really managed to pull in the crowds this summer.

“We employ 20 extra seasonal staff for the summer months to deal with the increase in visitors.

“The beach has been particularly busy and our beach cleaners have been working hard to deal with the massive amount of litter left on the beach.”

The beach, seafront and city centre street cleaning team work from 6am to 10pm.

He added: “We ask that people dispose of their litter responsibly by recycling using the bins provided for this and otherwise using the litter bins or taking waste home for disposal.

“We urge everyone not to leave waste on the beach as this is unpleasant and can be dangerous.”

The council said that extra provision would be made for the bank holiday weekend and Pride.
