Brighton bus names revealed
We explain the origins & local connections of those names on Brighton’s buses
William Hurt (66E) – All of the interiors for Gorky Park, in which the Oscar-winning actor plays a disillusioned soviet police officer, were filmed in Moulsecoomb.
Wee Ben Nevis (82) – In one of his adventures, the super-strong 1970s Scottish Beano character strung an enormous rubber band between Brighton’s two piers, which he used to catapult a bully all the way to France.
Henry Rollins (11A) – The much-tattooed, bodybuilding spoken word artiste and Black Flag vocalist included a song entitled “Aldrington Blues” on his 1987 LP Drive by Shooting.
Mr Angry (99B) – The unfunny, fictional Steve Wright In The Afternoon phone-in voice was originally called “Belligerent Bernie from Brighton.”
Charles Dutoit (65) – The Swiss-born principal conductor and artistic director of the London Philharmonic holds the record for amount won (£7.50) on one of those machines on Brighton Pier where coins push other coins off moving levels.
Edward Woodward (44) – The president of the Callan Appreciation Society lives in Brunswick Sq, the president of the Wicker Man Appreciation Society lives in Kemp Town, the president of the Equalizer Appreciation Society lives in Hanover, and the president of the Actors With Three Consecutive Identical Syllables In Their Names Appreciation Society lives in Hollingbury.
The Pastons – The Medieval inveterate letter-writing family made the first recorded mention of a ‘Dirtie Weekende’, and also of ‘Knee-trembler’.
Jim Dale – A special screening of Disney’s much-unloved 1979 live action comedy ‘The Spaceman and King Arthur’, followed by a Q&A with three cast members, the assistant director, and Jim Dale through webcam, was hosted by Andy Medhurst at Sussex University in 2004.
Benny from Crossroads (52) – Everyone’s favourite educationally-subnormal, woolly hat wearing handyman opened the then new Churchill Square branch of Tesco in 1978.
