Biba & Beyond, Barbara Hulanicki, opens at Brighton Museum

In the 1960s a Brighton Art School graduate revolutionised the retail industry through her fashion label, Biba. This autumn you can discover her story at Brighton Museum’s major new exhibition Biba And Beyond: Barbara Hulanicki.
Opening on 22 September, the exhibition celebrates all that is Biba – the fashion, the lifestyle and the branding that all helped to define the ’60s as a generation that swung! The exhibition also looks beyond Biba at Barbara Hulanicki’s successful careers in design, fashion illustration and interior design. With loans from major collectors and private individuals the new exhibition will tell her amazing story through fashion, film, illustrations, music, photography, ephemera and the memories and reminiscences of those who shared the experience.

Dress, c1967,
This tiny cotton mini dress is printed with a psychedelic print in acid colours. The white collar and cuffs were popular for dresses and suits and appeared on garments for a number of the years after this date.
Dress, c1970
The print of this dress is known as the banana print. It first featured on Biba wallpapers which was sold in the Kensington High Street shop (1969-1973). The print has since become a Barbara Hulanicki classic and has featured most recently, in 2006, on a wallpaper for Habitat.
Make-up, c1985
To complement Barbara Hulanicki’s own clothing name label in the 1980s she produced a make-up range. This was sold in her shops as well as nationwide through small, independent shops and outlets.
Trouser suit, c1971
Trouser suits were designed and sold throughout the life of Barbara Hulanicki’s Biba label. They were sold in 1964 when the label was still a postal boutique right through to last Biba shop in Derry & Toms.
