Smoke Fairies

There was something of a bottle neck at the back as the venue was packed out for popular Sussex duo Smoke Fairies. The singers’ liquid vocals and clear harmonies were reminiscent of classic folk bands of the seventies with hints of medieval ballads, while the music from the band was heavy blues rock with strong drums and a bit of guitar distortion. Their sound has a vintage, seventies rock feel, but the songs were at times ethereal and almost spookily haunting. The girls’ intermittent and nervous stage chat contrasted with the more polished music, but the crowd didn’t mind, responding with spontaneous shouts of ‘we love the Smoke Fairies’.
