Romeo & Juliet
And so the scene was set in ‘fair Verona’ for Icarus Theatre’s take on Shakespeare’s tragic love story. It’s the classic boy meets girl-girls family at war with boy’s-both run away to be married-both families oppose said nuptial-girl fakes death-boy commits suicide in grief-girl wakes up and then commits suicide-story. I know this is probably treasonous but the first half did go on a bit. Glorious language and all but the plot was a bit pedestrian despite the best efforts of the cast. The second half really kicked off with some great emotionally charged scenes and despite the clangy sword fights this was a pretty decent piece of theatre.
