E.coli warning, artwork brightens up the city, ultra-fast broadband bid & a unique ring bearer

It’s been a packed time for news, with a police shooting, an E.coli scare and the city coming out top dog for caring for canines – and with the Lib Dems conference in town, it’s set to get even busier.

Tragedy struck when a man holding a shotgun was shot by police after a domestic incident in Seaford. He was being treated in hospital in Brighton and police are describing it as attempted murder of police.

Local councillor Dawn Barnet was pelted with eggs after asking travellers to move from Portslade Cricket Club, and more names are being added to the petition against a new permanent travellers’ site at Horsdean, Patcham.

A warning about the potential risks of eating ‘rare’ burgers has been issued by the city council’s food safety team who have noticed a trend among some eateries to offer rare or medium beef burgers which, the experts say, pose a risk of E.coli contamination.

The city is now officially the most popular place for people to visit with their dogs in Britain after a survey by dog food firm Cesar. Model and dog lover Jodi Kidd, Cllr Christopher Hawtree and animal welfare officer Maggi Hollands celebrated the award outside the Royal Pavilion.

The old Astoria cinema has been brightened with the council erecting prints by the city’s famous artist and printmaker Janet Brooke, and Saltdean Lido is to get £130,000 for urgent repairs. The city, which took over the building recently, says so much work is needed it may not open for next summer.

Cash confiscated from convicted loan sharks is being ploughed back into community projects voted for by city residents – the England Illegal Money Lending Team and the city council have joined forces to track down offenders and benefit community groups.

Ultra-fast internet services came a step closer with the council bidding for £3.3m government funding for enhanced fibre optic connections and broadband wireless connections for buildings and outdoors on mobile devices in the city centre, parts of Hove, Kemp Town and university areas in Lewes Road. They say it would create 1,000 jobs and 135 new small companies a year. Around £12.5m a year would be injected into the local economy and it would unlock £1.37m of private investment into the city’s digital infrastructure. Local digital firm Wired Sussex are helping with the bid and the city should hear back in the autumn.

Jennifer and Alex Eichner celebrated their wedding in Sussex with Jennifer’s horse Max – he was the ring bearer, carrying the ring around his neck in a bag. Jennifer said: “Max has been in my life for 13 years… I couldn’t imagine getting married without him.”

And finally, this week’s rant comes from Mrs Tina Robertson from Brighton: “TV stations should be made to put the date a programme was made in the opening credits – I watched a documentary on Diana the other day and was baffled when there was no mention of her death – the closing credits confirmed the programme had been made several years before the crash in Paris. I felt cheated – like I’d been duped. It’s tantamount to fraud in my view.” What do you think? Email comment@thelatest.co.uk
