Live Food Show
This year the Brighton & Hove Food and Drink Festival’s Live Food Show (15–16 September, Hove Lawns) made its debut at the Sussex & The World Market and was attended by a large crowd of foodie fans keen to pick up cooking tips and taste the results of the demonstrated dishes. Hosted by local food guru Andrew Kay the show started in style with Oliver Peyton – presenter of The Great British Menu – who was followed on stage over the two days by top chefs including those from Hotel du Vin, Drakes and Moshi Moshi, along with L’Eglise International Chef Exchange guests Jean Louis Gelin and Yves Rivoiron from Lyon. The chefs all took part in a mystery Five Minute Challenge using fine food supplied by sponsors Ritter Courivaud, and kids fun on Sunday morning included dinosaur pie making with Cookery Doodle Doo.

International Chef Exchange Dinner
A singing chef, hearty French cooking, heavenly cheese, good wine and convivial company were the order of the evening as this year’s Brighton & Hove Food and Drink Festival’s International Chef Exchange [ICEx] took place. Guest chefs Jean Louis Gelin of La Meuniere and Yves Rivoiron of Cafe des Federations joined resident chef Henri Dubus in the kitchen at Jean Christophe and Julia Martin’s L’Eglise in Hove to cook for a packed restaurant. Guests included Caroline Lucas MP and her husband; Arnaud Pollet-Thioller and Paul Lenik of Ritter Courivaud [who provided the fabulous cheese board]; and James Dempster of Montefiore. The chefs were a big hit – and not only with their cooking – Jean Louis proved he had hidden talents as he came out to sing for the diners after the meal.

British Beard & Moustache
Championships

If you are a facial hair fan and like nothing more than applauding a man
for his commitment to growing ‘graspable extremities’, then Brighton Corn Exchange was the place to be on Saturday 15 September. From natural moustaches and man-kinis to pure monocle warfare, the British Beard and Moustache Championships boasted a wide range of astounding styles and imaginative designs. There are not many events that bring the young into competition with older generations, however the BBMC did it with dignity, setting apart the boys from the gentlemen.
