BBC Radio Comedy Award

An overall promising array of new comics got off to a shaky start at the Brighton heat of the BBC Radio New Comedy Award competition. Most notably William Peck, who’s delivery was so poor that one ‘joke’ ended up sounding unintentionally racist and thus was rewarded with a deafening silence. Things improved greatly with runner up Johnny Lennard’s eloquent 50-Shades parody whilst fellow runner up David Elms deliberately stilted performance drew mass approval. Eventual winner Lucy Beaumont was the real star of the night. Her character, a naïve and blunt ‘working-class-lass-from-Hull’, had the audience convulsing out of their seats with laughter and is now a hot contender for the rest of the competition.
