Hospice Care Week
The Martlets Hospice will be one of more than 100 hospices across the UK taking part in this year’s Hospice Care Week (8-14 October).
During the annual awareness week Martlets Hospice will be highlighting how they reach out to and support the many different communities they serve.
A range of events and activities will be taking place during the week, including teams from the Hospice visiting our shops and Spiritual Lunchtimes at the Hospice.
Nursing staff from the InPatient Unit and Hospice at Home team, along with Hospice Lottery canvassers and members of the volunteering team will be visiting Martlets shops during the week. On Tuesday they will be in the Peacehaven Shop, on Wednesday in Brighton, Western Road Shop and on Thursday in Hove, Blatchington Road Shop. Staff will be available from 12 – 4 on these days, to answer questions on anything from what’s the top prize in the Lottery to how do you help patients die with dignity.
Hospice Chaplain Dawn Allen will be holding Spiritual lunchtimes at the Hospice on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday between 1 & 2pm. Open to anyone, this is a chance to meet Dawn who will explain how spiritual care in a hospice is less about religion and more about being alongside people whatever they’re values, faith or beliefs are.
Caroline Lower at the Martlets Hospice said:“Many people are surprised to find out that hospice care is for everyone, including people of all faiths, ethnicities and social groups, and people with a range of life-limiting conditions.
“This Hospice Care Week, we want to tell everyone in Brighton & Hove that your local hospice is here for you, and that our care is tailored to the needs, wishes and culture of each individual and their families and carers.
“But we also need your support so we can reach out to more seriously ill people in our community and help them to make every day count.”
David Praill, chief executive of Help the Hospices, the UK charity for hospice care, added: “Hospice care is not about buildings. What makes hospice care unique is that it’s all about people and communities – from the people who support, volunteer and work in partnership with their local hospices, to the patients, friends and families who rely on them.
“This Hospice Care Week we want to show local communities that together, we are all hospice care.”
