Minister to visit three Brighton and Hove schools
Schools Minister Lord Hill of Oareford is to visit Brighton and Hove on Friday (12 October).
He is expected to spend time at three schools in the area
- Brighton, Hove and Sussex VI Form College (BHASVIC) in Dyke Road, Hove
- Brighton and Hove Bilingual Primary School in Falmer
- Brighton Aldridge Community Academy (BACA) also in Falmer
Lord Hill, a Conservative peer, was the only member of Education Secretary Michael Gove’s ministerial team to survive the recent reshuffle.
He worked as political secretary to Prime Minister John Major during the 1990s before setting up his own public relations business.
He now has responsibility for free schools and academies and will be visiting the first of each in Brighton and Hove after meeting the senior management team at BHASVIC.
He is the second member of the coalition government to visit the Bilingual Primary School and BACA in three weeks.
Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg and his Spanish wife Miriam González Durántez visited Brighton and Hove’s first free school – and Britain’s first state-funded fully bilingual primary school on Tuesday 25 September.
Mr Clegg spoke in Spanish and English – the school’s two languages – during his visit before speaking with a group of pupils from BACA.
And Education Secretary Michael Gove told the House of Commons that he also planned to visit the Bilingual Primary School before the end of the year.
Miss Gopal said: “We are delighted that Lord Hill is coming to learn for himself how quickly young children can learn to speak in two languages.
“In the five weeks since we opened we have been delighted by the amazing progress that they have shown.
“We are confident that Lord Hill will be impressed too and hope that before long many more children will have the chance to learn in more than language.”
