The art of partying – Make your Christmas party the best ever

Latest 7 has handy hints & exciting ideas to make your Christmas party the best ever

Bah humbug to recession. There was never more need to award yourselves a jolly good bash than right now. Last year was tough, 2012 has been hard… but hey, it’s nearly over and with a lot of hard work most of us are doing okay. What better reason to celebrate than that?

The world of hospitality and catering has come up with a huge range of recession-busting ideas to make your Christmas as fun as it ever was, but respecting that we might be watching the pennies. Good fun need not cost a fortune so think hard about what you would like to do this year. Restaurants have a massive range of festive menus, from bargain buffets to slap-up gourmet feasts.

You can join in the huge party events hosted by large venues and hotels where the whole deal, from food and drink to entertainment, comes as a complete package. Or you might prefer something a little more low key, perhaps a private dining room in a restaurant or pub. Take a good look around and find out what’s on offer.

It’s always worth thinking outside the box, too. Does it have to be dinner? Or would you enjoy a lunch party more? Does your celebration have to be based around food and drink or could you gather for a theatre trip, a concert, a comedy club or cabaret? Will your colleagues strip the willow at a ceilidh or pick up a microphone and give you a song? The city is full of exciting places that offer everything from burlesque to karaoke and you can always talk to them about catering options. Some will have their own facilities and others will allow you to organise your own.

Why not have a themed party this year? Few of us can resist dressing up and letting our hair down and venues would surely be as happy to take your booking if you plan to turn up dressed as vicars and tarts or panto favourites (although it might be a good idea to warn them in advance).

Booking is of course essential. Every year we receive requests from people asking us for advice on where they can go as they have left things too late. The truth is that most parties have put in place their bookings by the middle of October.

Here at Latest 7 we have tried the lot, from formal dinners to fish and chips, from Indian banquets to Oriental karaoke fests – and we have loved them all.

The top tips are these: find out what the mood is and the best possible date, shop around for appropriate choices at the price you can afford and cut that deal as soon as possible to avoid being disappointed. A very premature Merry Christmas to you all!

Breeze Brasserie
In the short time Breeze has been open it has attracted a loyal clientele who return time and time again. Why is that, you ask? Well, there are three easy answers: quality, value and satisfaction. As one satisfied customer puts it: “On every occasion that we have eaten there we have been impressed by the quality of the cooking, stylish modern interpretations of Mediterranean dishes, sometimes with an Asian twist. We liked the generosity of the food too, decent portions of tasty food to satisfy even the heartiest of appetites, and finally value for money.” This Christmas the menu at Breeze reflects all three of those factors.

Starters include celeriac and parsnip soup with roasted chestnut and truffle oil, chicken, wild mushroom and leek terrine with pear and tomato chutney and toasted brioche, garlic king prawns with avocado, tomato salsa and a coriander, chilli and lime dressing, and deep fried breaded goat cheese with root vegetable salad and an orange and honey dressing.

Main courses start with a traditional roast turkey with walnut and sage stuffing, bacon, chipolata sausage, duck fat potatoes and honey roasted winter vegetables and include pan-fried sea bass with anchovy and basil pesto mash, sautéed spinach and garlic and truffle velouté, butternut squash and spinach parcel with saffron, lentils in coconut milk, coriander and ginger puree and a roasted duck breast with celeriac puree, caramelised red cabbage, asparagus, baby carrots, port and bacon jus.

To finish, the menu offers Christmas pudding with brandy custard, raspberry crème brûlée with shortbread biscuit, rhubarb and apple crumble with clotted cream or a selection of ice creams – and all for £24.95 a head.
In the eclectic surroundings of this North Laine favourite they can cater for parties large and small, lunch and dinner, and all in a relaxed and informal atmosphere.

Souled Out
Good times are here! Get together with friends and celebrate with some genuinely uplifting, get-to-your-feet, soul reviving music. Brighton Dome, Saturday 1 December, 8pm, is the place to be for a soul show extravaganza like no other. A top line-up alongside Brighton’s no. 1 soul choir will perform an inspired set in the style that people have come to associate with Souled Out performances: dynamic, top quality and a whole lot of fun.

Since 2009 nearly 500 people have been part of Brighton’s choir with soul, presented by igmusic. The choir has a reputation for high energy, exhilarating workshops and fantastic performances that are accompanied by the sensational igmusic band. The band alone is made up of some of the foremost soul musicians in the UK, and combined with the ever-funky Souled Out shows have quickly earned a reputation for providing exhilarating and soulful entertainment of the highest quality.

“Sharply presented and buzzing with energy, [the show] was an evening of multifarious charms. What’s more, it made a lot of auto-tuned contemporary pop seem like a pallid substitute for real musicality.” – Peter Quinn, the arts desk, March 2012.

The Brighton Dome show is going to be quite simply the biggest and best yet with Souled Out performing centre stage. This very special night will include special guest performances with ‘90s soul / R&B group Damage (‘Ghetto Romance’, ‘Love II Love’) and the soul legend Jocelyn Brown. The song list is guaranteed to include a top favourite tune for everyone that will have the whole audience on its feet and feeling glad to be alive!

It’s the ultimate work Christmas party with a difference. This will be a night to remember and the perfect pre-Christmas celebration. Why not organise something different this year for your work’s Christmas do? Souled Out and friends will provide a night out like no other, the perfect party atmosphere in the company of sensational singers and musicians, with the chance to sing out, get down and boogie. Group discounts available for 10 or more. It really doesn’t get better than this.

Fancy being on stage for the show? It’s not too late to join the choir and be part of the funkiest show in town. Try a free taster! Weekly rehearsals or Saturday workshops available for adults and children (aged 8-16yrs). C’mon, get on board the soul train!
