This week: Richard Cairns, Headmaster of Brighton College
“Brighton has such an open society; I like to encourage tolerance and respect. I teach every student in the school so I know who they are and what they are thinking. We have happy children here, a happy atmosphere and great teachers. It is a kind, tolerant and open-minded modern school. This is the first time I have received an award and this cup is actually made of silver!”
Visionary Richard Cairns, Headmaster of Brighton College, was awarded the title of England’s Headmaster of the Year 2012 by Tatler magazine, at the prestigious Tatler Schools Awards in London. Richard has been Headmaster of the school for seven years. Brighton College is the only school in England to have seen academic improvement every single year for six years and is the leading co-educational school in the country. Tatler pointed to the warm, friendly and tolerant environment that Richard has established. He abolished Saturday school, reduced the number of lessons, upped the quality of teaching, cut
back on the number of GCSEs pupils take and improved results beyond recognition.
