Josh Widdecombe

There was a time when observational comedy felt like an overwhelmingly fresh approach to stand-up. Unfortunately for the current batch of performers peddling this style of humour, in most cases it now feels tired, stale and sadly unnecessary. Take Devonian Josh Widdecombe, for instance. Here was a talented young star of TV and radio with a splendid gift for slightly angry delivery. It’s to Widdecombe’s credit that he managed to raise guffaws from innocuous material about such done-to-death themes as iPhones and where the audience members hailed from. Still, there was only so much his presentation could elevate unsurprising-at-best, boring-at-worst ideas, leaving at least this reviewer cold.
