Pokey La Farge

Pokey and his South City Three looked the part and played a fine set of authentic old time classics and originals to a sell out crowd. A number of styles were covered; from hillbilly and hot jazz to ragtime and western swing, and a sing-along ‘La La Blues’ was a catchy crowd pleaser. Pokey’s voice was similar to Jools Holland’s but without grating and with the slap bass steering each song, the guitarist displayed excellent jazz stylings while the drummer switched between harmonica and washboard. The evening ended on an appropriate high with Bob Wills’ ‘The Devil Ain’t Lazy’.
