Bruce Hammers’ Bananapocalypse

Mat Ewans’ collection of sketch and character comedy was smartly prepared and cleverly delivered, demonstrating a sharply put together show, well-written with punchlines liberally scattered throughout. Presented ostensibly under the guise of one-eyed actor Bruce Hammers’ reminiscences on his fictitious big blockbuster success 1982’s ‘Bananapocalypse’, Ewans smartly incorporated some impressive and beautifully put together pastiche clips from the film itself, playing all of the characters himself and adding a deliberate Blade Runner-style air to proceedings. This was fun, this was entertaining, this was the end of the run after a residency at the Edinburgh Fringe and his familiarity with the material was palpable. The audience interaction was fun, but the show doesn’t need it. Next time, save the stage solely for the professional.
