Pocket Henry V
This spirited distillation, billed as ‘thrilling Shakespeare for ages 8+’ far exceeded my expectations. The poster is butch & brutal. I had anticipated the soiled shirts, stamping & shouting but there was true Shakespearean comedy and improvisation too. Carefully abridged, it’s in no way dumbed-down. The patriotism, philosophising and pathos are all there. It naturally suits a younger audience and its excellent drama will excite them. Six men, a handful of props and some well-judged music transform the theatre space expertly. First-timers are sure to seek out a full-length production, and then perhaps even more Shakespeare. Now that’s some success!
