Gong

Having led legendary progressive space rockers Gong for 45 years, Daevid Allen and Gilli Smyth come across as your mad grandparents who have dropped one too many acid trips and have lost it forever. The second half saw Allen appear in a costume that made him look like a cross between Papa Smurf and a giant sperm. Musically Gong ticked every box, from acid jazz and funk, short staccoto humourous songs to trippy psychedlic numbers that rambled for days. Plus, contemporary political riffs focussing on the Occupy movement. A glorious throwback that’s still relevant today.
