Gallon Drunk

Back for their second Brighton gig in six months, James Johnston’s swamp blues band Gallon Drunk hit the stage with a nod that they were already near curfew. Making up a set on the spot, the group thundered through two decades’ worth of boiling hot garage tracks, Johnston’s whirlwind guitar swings matched in intensity by focussed blasts from saxophonist Terry Edwards. Between-song fumbling aside, Gallon Drunk’s energy remained high until a welcome slide through sleazy 90s classic ‘You Should Be Ashamed’. A final, organ driven barrel through ‘Killing Time’ finished this frantic show on an ear-splitting, overloaded peak.
