Man dies after Brighton fire

A man has died after a fire at an empty property in Brighton early this morning (Wednesday 28 November).

East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said that fire crews were sent to tackle the blaze in Kemp Town at about 3.50am.

A man was brought out of the old St John the Baptist Roman Catholic School building on the corner of Upper Bedford Street and St George’s Terrace.

But he was pronounced dead at the scene although the cause of death has yet to be established.

Sussex Police said that officers were working with the fire service to establish the cause of the fire and added that St George’s Terrace was temporarily closed while investigations took place.

The building was believed to have been used by squatters.

A 48-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of arson and is currently in custody.
