Cinecity: I, Anna + Q&A from Barnaby Southcombe
‘I, Anna’ stars Charlotte Rampling, Gabriel Byrne and the cityscape of London. All equally impressive. Rampling is Anna, a recently single 60-something woman living with her daughter and granddaughter in a one bedroom flat who finds her entrance onto the singles speed-dating scene a necessary evil that delivers more nasty than even she was expecting. The film unravels into a chronological confusion of a subtle whodunnit, filled with lonely damaged people set to the background of the diverse architecture of London and a remarkable soundscape. At times a little more oblique than necessary and at others a tad too transparent, the whole of the film emerged as an impressive debut from director/writer and son of the female lead Barnaby Southcombe. With this unusual perspective, the following Q&A session was particularly enjoyable.
