Cinecity: Turning & Q+A

This beautifully shot film of Antony And The Johnsons’ 2006 European tour delivered so much more than your average band-on-the-road-documentary. The stage featured a revolving plinth on which a succession of stunning transgender women stood static or postured; their images projected behind the musicians. Moving interviews, conducted by Hegarty, where each woman described their painful journey, were compassionately complemented by his sumptuous, melancholic music. Afterwards, director Charles Atlas explained how he’d befriended a pre-fame Antony Hegarty and described the evolution of the movie since its conception as a one-off piece for the Whitney biennial in 2004.
