Cerys by Candlelight

Cerys Matthews has a smooth, sultry voice, and the Spanish folk song at the end was a sweet and moving highlight, suggesting that more songs and less nattering might have produced a more memorable evening. The stories and poems were nice but the audience participation was almost panto at times, and the short length of the set was arguably poor value for the £25 ticket price. Cerys has an obvious, infectious love for words and music, and it was a good idea to celebrate this in a communal, singalong, friendly way, but the promised “winter warming magic” felt a little contrived.
