Portslade post office told that it can’t instal cash machine

The post office in Portslade Old Village has been refused planning permission for a cash machine.

An application was submitted by the Bank of Ireland to fit a cash machine at the South Street premises.

But Brighton and Hove City Council turned it down. It said that people using and queuing to use the “hole in the wall” would “cause disturbance and a loss of privacy” to the post office’s neighbours.

The council said that the cash machine would attract visitors to the area at night and as a result “would cause an increase in noise disturbance to residents living in the vicinity”.

It also criticised the look of the proposed cash machine. It said that it would cause “an unbalanced appearance … interrupting the rhythm of the shopfront” and that the design included “an unattractive glazed surround”.
