Brighton Philharmonic Orchestra, Daniel Bhattacharya (violin), Alun Darbyshire (oboe) , Barry Wordsworth (conductor)

This delightful feast of works by favourite composers began with Haydn at the peak of his powers in Symphony No. 98. I felt musically nourished, and then came Bach’s C minor Concerto for violin and oboe, a gourmet’s treat indeed. Our local soloists passed the themes so lightly back and forth with the orchestra. Special mention must be made of Alistair Young at the harpsichord in these works, taking the part that both composers would have played. The banquet’s conclusion was one of Mozart’s finest Symphonies, No. 39 K543, composed four years before the Haydn but sounding so much richer.
