Comedy: Milton Jones – On the Road 2013

Master of his own world & possibly the only comic to release a ‘U’ certificate DVD in 2012 comes to Brighton

Stepping into the world of Milton Jones is like stepping through Alice’s looking glass and landing on a banana skin. Quite unlike anyone else on the live stand-up circuit, Jones revels in the absurd, the silly, and the childishly simple and yet delivers brilliantly clear punchlines that stay with you well after you’ve left the theatre.

You’ve probably already seen snippets or heard chapters of Jones’ stories and alternative universes due to popular demand on the likes of Live At The Apollo, Mock The Week, Dave’s One Night Stand on television, as well as his nine – count ‘em – radio series for BBC Radio 4.

Live performance is where he lives best though, having picked up plaudits and awards for his well-crafted gags. I’ve seen him play Komedia’s raucous Krater Club at the weekend and pull every stag do, hen night and drunken birthday celebration into line in wonder and awe at what comedic gem he will conjure next. Painting with words, constructing with gags and preaching to the converted, everyone wants to live and explore alongside him in the reality of Jones’ boundless imagination. No exaggeration, any show from this man that I’ve been to has been a proper joy from start to finish.

Last time Milton Jones toured to the Theatre Royal Brighton his support slot was taken up by James Acaster, who went on to be nominated for Best Comedy Show in the Foster’s Edinburgh Comedy Awards 2012. With shoes this big to fill, it will be interesting to see Chris Martin, who has been selected to support him this time around – prompting another good reason to turn up on time and not miss the opening act.

Milton Jones – On The Road 2013, Theatre Royal Brighton, Saturday 2 February, 7.30pm, £21
