Courtney Pine
Carnival fever hit Brighton as the UK’s leading jazz ambassador presented his new Caribbean-flavoured album. Backed by a strong band of equally fine soloists, Pine amazed with his lightning-quick finger work and off-the-scale acrobatics on a set that covered a range of West Indian styles. Graciously stepping offstage to accompany Cameron Pierre on the guitarist’s own sun-kissed original, the leader also allowed ample space for the band to shine. Ska, soca and Rollins-style calypso featured heavily and the steel drums added an authentic touch. A frenetic finale ended a night that warmed up everyone’s frozen cockles.
