The Dizzy Gillespie Afro-Cuban Experience
After a late start and a slightly shaky beginning (a little cymbal adjustment during the opening number), the band quickly got into their stride and took off like the proverbial rocket. The standard of musicianship was truly astonishing. Each player was given ample opportunity to show what they were capable of in some blistering solos. In particular the drummer, Robby Ameen, demonstrated conclusively that a drum solo need not be the opportunity to nip to the bar for a drink. His command of his kit drew smiles and gasps from the audience. An absolutely compelling evening of sublimely played afro-cuban style jazz. The ghost of Mr Gillespie was, no doubt, smiling from ear to ear.
