The heart-breaking music of Wagner’s ill-requited lovers ‘Tristan & Isolde’ began this lush programme for St Valentine’s Day. It closed magnificently with star-crossed lovers Romeo & Juliet, as expressed by Prokofiev. The BPO thrive on ballet music, with their conductor lifting from the podium in his enthusiasm. They all enjoyed it as much as we did, making such sound that would require ear protection if they kept it up for too long. The treasure of this concert was the gift of two seldom-heard romantic concertos by Max Bruch. These were the sweetest of Valentine cards, each one a musical caress!
