Bitter Ruin
After years slogging away playing tiny gigs, Brighton’s dark cabaret/flamenco duo of Georgia Train and Ben Richards, better known as Bitter Ruin, finally showed much-deserved signs of major league success last year with a coveted tour support with US indie royalty Ben Folds. The classically trained pair played an endearing final night of their own tour to a packed crowd, who lapped up this hypnotic, histrionic set. Coupling a Kate Bush-esque dazzling vocal range with forceful acoustic guitar on theatrically heartbreaking songs about love’s malady (particularly on the broken ‘Child In A Sea Cave’ and tender ‘Brand New Me’), it was obvious this talented act is in the ascendency.
