Three looks: the ultimate blow dry for Valentine’s Day

If you want to achieve Blake Lively’s effortless loose waves, or want to achieve one of the glamorous styles that will be gracing the red carpet at the Brit awards, then look no further. The Trevor Sorbie salon in Brighton held a Blow Dry Masterclass last week and I went along to get all the tips. Want to achieve the perfect hairstyle this Valentine’s Day? It starts with the perfect blow dry. Take a lesson from the pros:

STYLE 1: GLAM
Style created by Trevor Sorbie’s Senior Top Stylist Alison Stevens:
This look achieves glamorous volume and movement; as seen on Kate Middleton, Angelina Jolie and Cheryl Cole. It works well on mid-length to longer hair, whether you’re naturally curly or straight.

Perfect for: A night out on the town, when you have plenty of time to get ready.

1. Start by using a lightweight mousse, combed throughout the hair (Trevor Sorbie Beautiful Volume, Volumising Mousse, £5.10, available from Boots stores nationwide, Trevor Sorbie salons

2. Spray on a volume booster at the roots (Trevor Sorbie Salon X-clusive Volume Booster, available in salon, £10.50).

3. Place velcro rollers (Velcro self-grip rollers, £15.99 available from Boots stores nationwide, Trevor Sorbie salons, on the top sections of the hair and by pinning curls with hair pins in side section – this can be personalised depending on the look desired.

4. Allow curls to dry and set by keeping rollers and pins in place for 45 minutes. On the remaining hair, use a large radial brush to create volume in small manageable sections of hair. Add volume by blow drying under the hair at the root, curling hair through the brush and smoothing through to the ends.

5. Once the hair is dry, spray well with hairspray to set the look and gently remove clips and rollers. Run your hands gently through the curls to create the finished look.

STYLE 2: CURLY
Style created by Trevor Sorbie Director Morgan Rhodes

This style creates beautiful, bouncy curls as seen on Beyonce, Rita Ora and the Olsen twins. It works well on anything from slightly wavy hair to tight curls and ringlets.

Perfect for: an instant change without using scissors. Achieve 1920s inspired glam ringlets and a faux bob to instantly update your look without a permanent change.

The secret: The key to achieving beautiful curls is to start with very wet hair, use the right products and to dry slowly using a diffuser to avoid frizz and fluffiness.

Curls can be created either by curling the hair around the finger and pinning curls to the head with hair pins and leaving the hair to dry and teasing out when dried, or by adding curl cream to the natural hair (Trevor Sorbie Beautiful Curls Curl Cream, £5.10 available from Boots stores nationwide, Trevor Sorbie salons, and diffusing the hair, or finally, by blow drying the hair straight with a large radial brush and adding curl with a straightening wand.

With a wand:
1. Pick up hair an inch from the roots, wrap around the wand, curling hair away from the face and keep the wand in the hair for 10-15 seconds until the hair is hot (that’s the secret for a lasting curl!).

2. Either leave curls tight or run your fingers through the hair to loosen and break up the style. Add serum throughout the hair to finish (Trevor Sorbie Salon X-Clusive Hi Shine Serum, available in salon and online at www.trevorsorbie.com, £11.25).

STYLE 3: VOLUME

Style created by Trevor Sorbie Brighton’s Top Stylist Rosie Tappin

A straight look with volume – think Megan Fox, Sandra Bullock and Kelly Rowland, this works with hair of all lengths and is adaptable to all hair types.

Perfect for: making flat, lifeless hair interesting! Even straight styles need a bit of encouragement for added oomph!

To achieve volume it all starts with the blow dry:
1 Dry roots first
2 Ensure you elevate the hair when drying
3 Use the right product.

1. Prepare the hair by combing through mousse (Trevor Sorbie Salon X-clusive Big Hair Mousse, available in salon and online £9.25) and spray on a volume booster at the roots (Trevor Sorbie Salon X-clusive Volume Booster, available in salon and online £10.50).

2. Dry the hair by elevating the roots and blasting roots from underneath holding the hair with tension in the brush – smooth through to the ends.

3. Volume can also be added by using straightening irons – hold the straighteners at the root and lift the hair up and away from the face.
