Celeb City: Great Escape

Brighton’s Grammy winner (& it’s not Adele!) plus the Great Escape, Paloma & Frankie’s new look

The greatest of all
Following in the footsteps of bands such as Foals, Alt J and even megastar Adele, Bastille, Aluna George and Tom Odell have been confirmed among the first wave of bands announced for this year’s Great Escape festival in Brighton. Taking place across more than 30 of our city’s venues between 16–18 May, the festival will also feature The 1975, Chvrches, Drenge, The Neighbourhood and Wolf Alice. Last year highlights included Alabama Shakes, Django Django and Grimes – who since one many accolades for her fantastic Visions album in 2012. Tickets for the event are now on sale, visit www.escapegreat.com for more info.

Brighton’s Grammy award winner
It wasn’t just Brighton’s Adele who won big at this year’s Grammys. Local gospel composer Matt Redman also picked up two gongs at the recent awards show! His song ‘10,000 Reasons (Bless The Lord)’, which he wrote himself and performed with Jonas Myrin, was joint first in the Best Contemporary Christian Music Song Category. And, if that wasn’t enough, our man also won Best Gospel or Contemporary Christian Music Performance with the track! A regular at St Peter’s Church in Brighton, Redman describes his music as “modern day hymns”. Adele won the award for Best Pop Solo Performance for ‘Set Fire to the Rain’ (live) at The Royal Albert Hall – natch.

Cute puppy + Frankie = hit?
Saltdean’s most famous resident – bottom-bearing, skinny-jean wearing – Frankie Cocozza is returning to Brighton to gig at The Haunt. Frankie will take to the stage at the Pool Valley club on Saturday March 2 to sing his (ahem) hits ‘She’s got a Motorcycle’ and, latest release, ‘Catastophic Casanova’ to teenage girls. His latest video – using the One Direction formula for undeniable cuteness – sees him cuddle up to a cute puppy before playing a pair of bongos. The follow-up to debut ‘She’s Got A Motorcycle’, shows Frankie’s softer side as he sings about a girl who loves despite of his many flaws. Hmm. Let’s hope the puppies help it do a little better than ‘She’s Got A Motorcycle’, which debuted at 89 in the singles chart… For more info on tickets visit www.seetickets.com

Our favourite Brit nominee
Lisa in the office headed to the Brighton Centre to see the fantastic singer Paloma Faith the other week. Paloma exceeded all expectations and proved why she is a worthy 2013 Brit Award nominee, wearing a fantastic dress that can only be described as glamour at its best as she clamoured around the stage with her huge voice and even bigger high heels!

She treated the audience to all her hits from her first and second album. This was two hours of pure Paloma and her amazing band, no special effects – perfect! Her second album, Fall to Grace, is a favourite here in the office and we hope it wins the coveted Brit award. Paloma Faith received two nominations at the 2013 Brit Awards: Best Female and for Best British Album for Fall To Grace. Paloma has also revealed that she is writing her third studio album in New York City! We can’t wait to hear it!
