Holding out for a hero
The ninth Brighton Heroes Run will take place on Sunday 19 May 2013 in aid of Pass It On Africa.
It’s a chance for families and friends to come together, dress up as their favourite super hero and run for a great cause.

It looks set to be a sell out in 2013 so sign up now! Take part in The Mini Heroes 500m Dash, The Super 5K or The Heroic 10K. The event starts and finishes on Hove Lawns, with the emphasis on fun over racing.

Prizes are awarded for best costumes in all categories. Previous races have seen Lego Batman and Robin, The Teenage Mutant Ninja Heroes and more. Who will you be?

Pass It On Africa have a fundraising target of £20,000 for this year’s event to help expand their school projects in Ghana and Kenya. They are challenging every runner to raise £20 sponsorship to help them reach their goal.To get involved visit

HD Brows
Okay, we all know the low down on HD TVs, but now your beauty can be High Definition too! It’s the latest celebrity trend – a high-precision treatment that gives you the perfect brows, dramatically enhancing your facial features. This wonder treatment is available in Brighton at The Lanes Health & Beauty, carried out by the lovely Jo. What makes HD Brows different?

The treatment uses seven precision steps to produce natural, sculptured brows. It’s about working with your natural shape to give a defined, air-brushed finish. Forget the horror stories: a thorough consultation on the desired shade and shape will be discussed on your first visit. There is a tint (keeping within one to two shades or your natural colour), waxing and plucking, all carried out in the luxurious treatment room so you feel truly pampered. Over plucking and uneven brows can be reshaped and restored to their natural beauty – in HD!

It was easy for Jo to tell I was left-handed as the left brow had been under attack of the tweezers more than the right! These were evened out, with the goal to fill in more of the left brow over a course of treatments (a pencil helps out in the meantime!).

Instantly noticeable, the eyes were enhanced and framed as never before. It’s easy to see why HD Brows are a celebrity favourite and is a very much in-demand service.

First Lady Michelle
Obama’s green fingers Robin St Clair Jones is on a mission to emulate Michelle Obama by encouraging everyone to grow vegetables. The Brighton businessman has launched Veg Patch People, which promises to create productive vegetable plots on anything from full-sized gardens to windowsill.

“I know through my own experience how rewarding growing your own vegetables is, but, if you’ve never done it before, it can be daunting,” Robin explains. “We’re just making it easy for people by doing all the hard work for them.” The First Lady famously planted a 1,100 square foot vegetable garden on the South Lawn of the White House. Robin started more modestly, but like Mrs Obama, he’s evangelical about growing food.

“Nothing is as good for you as getting your hands in the soil and producing what you eat,” he says. “It’s good for the body and the mind and it’s especially good for the soul. Everyone should be doing it.”

Brighton’s TV habits de-CODED
Watching the box is a favourite pastime of ours but did you know it’s not just want we watch that reflects our personality, but how we watch it too? New research released by TV service YouView reveals we tend to be a city of Ruthless Removers, with over half of Brighton (59%) deleting shows immediately after watching them. So, we like to be organised, tidy and clutter-free!

In contrast, nearly a quarter (23%) of those surveyed were identified as Self-Indulgers, who record TV shows in bulk and only watch them once they have accumulated several episodes.

Over a quarter (27%) admitted they rarely watch any TV on-demand, preferring instead to catch TV programmes live – known as FOMOs (fear of missing out). Finally, a fifth (20%) of those questioned were identified as Multi-taskers who actively tweet or update their Facebook status in relation to the show they are watching. Well, we do like to keep our finger-on-the-pulse technology-wise.
