Brighton academic wins literary accolade

A Brighton University academic has been chosen to write teaching material about Britain’s best young writers.

Katy Shaw, director of Centre 21 at the university’s Faculty of Arts, was picked by the British Council and Granta, one of the world’s biggest literary magazines.

Centre 21 is also known as C21, the Centre for Research in 21st Century Writings

Dr Shaw’s work will be used in universities in Britain and around the world.

Every ten years Granta publishes work by a new generation of British authors who they predict will define the next ten years.

The new Best of Young British Novelists will be announced by Granta in its issue published on Monday 15 April at the British Council in Spring Gardens, London.

Dr Shaw will prepare teaching material based on Granta’s new best of British authors list.

The material will be sent free to other universities to use in teaching contemporary British literature.

She said: “This commission is a great honour for the University of Brighton’s Centre 21 and puts Brighton at the forefront of this emerging field.

“It will be a pleasure to prepare material for academics in other countries and share the work of writers who are destined to become household names in the near future.”
